Furniture
PROJECT 827
This Queen Anne house, in the heart of the Cotswolds, was added to and altered in the mid 19th and 20th centuries. More recently the current owners undertook a major refurbishment project to rationalise the layout and modernise the house for 21st century living. Artichoke was commissioned to design, make and install the new kitchen, laundry, boot room, larder and dressing room for the house.
MATERIALS: Hand-painted furniture with antiqued oak bench seat, drawer fronts and interiors. Up and over doors running on bespoke brass tracks and glazed with hand made glass. Lost wax unpolished brass cabinet fittings.
PROJECT 823

MATERIALS: The furniture is made from English oak and left unfinished or 'in the white' to develop a patina over time. The 'produce' boxes are made of reclaimed oak from old lock gates with hand forged nails.

The library was fitted into an apartment in Marylebone mansion block. Our client wanted a library to primarily display his collection of vintage cars and to double up as an occasional study. The base cabinetry stores a variety of file systems and audio visual equipment. The painted backs of the bookcases prevent the furniture from becoming overbearing.
MATERIALS: Stained and polished European Walnut with brass fittings.
PROJECT 777
The style of this library furniture is typically Victorian. Artichoke drew inspiration from two sources to design this commission, primarily from cabinetry originally designed by C Hindley & Sons, a Victorian cabinet maker. The cheeks of the bookshelves and the stop beading detail were inspired by furniture fitted into a house in Dorset in 1894.
MATERIALS: European oak.

PROJECT 642
A timber gun and sporting room for a classical house in Dorset. Each shotgun and rifle was individually surveyed to create the perfect storage for each gun. The guns housed in the central section of the furniture were angled inwards and each rests on a padded hide to protect the stocks. The central island was designed to store cartridges and cleaning equipment. The edges of the island were angled slightly to stop cylindrical gun parts and cartridges rolling off the surface. Extra thick leather was used on the island top.
MATERIALS: European Oak, leather

A bespoke library for a property in Bath made from solid American Cherry. The success of a project such as this relies heavily on the accuracy of the initial site survey, a process which Artichoke takes great pride in undertaking extremely accurately. The quality of the fitting teams is also crucial. To control the quality of the fit, Artichoke employs all of its own fitting teams.

Terrazzo steps lead up to solid American white oak treads fitted onto a mild steel sub-frame. A powder coated rolled steel handrail wrapped in a leather sleeve winds up the stairs; a glass balustrade is suspended from the handrail above. White lacquered cabinets hang off the subframe under the stairs. Oak sliding panels with sheer fabric panelling can be seen in the background.

PROJECT 207
This piece of furniture was created for a library and is made of black walnut with glass shelves and lighting integrated throughout. The bookcase spans two floors and is five metres high with each cabinet containing a sub-section of shelving. Easy access was vital – a custom made aluminium ladder was the solution. A large element of the design included a specially engineered steel subframe to maximuse support and stability.
MATERIALS: American black walnut, glass, steel and aluminium.
