MAJOR PROJECTS
PROJECTs 797, 826, 827, 829 & 830
This Queen Anne house, in the heart of the Cotswolds, was added to and altered in the mid 19th and 20th centuries. More recently the current owners undertook a major refurbishment project to rationalise the layout and modernise the house for 21st century living. Artichoke was commissioned to design, make and install the new kitchen, laundry, boot room, larder and dressing room for the house.
MATERIALS:
Kitchen: Antiqued oak, Carrara marble, stainless steel, burnished nickel, maple wood, La Cornue range oven, bronze cabinet fittings.
Laundry: Hand-painted furniture, ironmongery, oak, willow, Zimbabwe granite.
Boot Room: Antiqued oak, hand made glass, unpolished brass fittings.
PROJECTs 820 & 823
The kitchen was designed for a former dining room in this substantial country house. We created two furniture 'elements' providing the main functions for the kitchen. Care has been taken not to interfere with the original architecture of the room. Tall Georgian windows enable light to flood over the furniture as well as providing delightful views of the grounds. Limited palettes of fine quality materials help create the feeling of an art installation; enhancing the drama of this fabulous room. The kitchen is connected to a scullery. The scullery was formerly a butler's pantry and provides additional space for utilities and storage that support the function of the main kitchen.
MATERIALS:
Kitchen: The island furniture is clad and the worktops are made from book matched Statuary marble. The furniture is finished with hand polished gloss pigmented lacquer.
Scullery: The furniture is made from English oak and left unfinished or 'in the white' to develop a patina over time. The 'produce' boxes are made of reclaimed oak from old lock gates with hand forged nails.
PROJECT 642
Artichoke designed the kitchen to compliment the classical architecture of the house. Twin islands were introduced to improve the working flow between the kitchen and scullery zones. In the Gun Room, each shotgun and rifle was individually surveyed to create the perfect storage for each gun. The edges of the central island were angled slightly to stop cylindrical parts and cartridges rolling off the surface. Extra thick leather was used on the island top.
MATERIALS:
Kitchen: Hand painted furniture in an oil based eggshell finish. Honed Carrara marble worktops. Locally quarried stone for the chimney piece surrounding the Aga.
Gun Room: European oak finished with oil and wax. Thick bridle leather details for production and wear.
PROJECTs 728 & 777
The brief was to create a kitchen which looked as though it had evolved and been added to over many years. Hand painted simple French farmhouse style furniture sits with a large central preparation island in the typical English Georgian style while a crockery cabinet and free standing larder/fridge unit were designed in the 17th Century English style. The style of the library furniture is typically Victorian, primarily inspired by C Hindley & Sons, a Victorian cabinet maker.
MATERIALS: Kitchen: European oak, hand scraped and waxed English Elm, Verde Maranachi granite.
Study: European oak.
PROJECTs 620 & 706
Close liaison with English Heritage was required during the redesign of the kitchen for a Grade I 1960s house in London. The original Parana Pine cabinet doors were removed and restored by Artichoke and integrated into a new design. Glass and lacquer elements were then introduced to combine with the terazzo and stainless steel worktops. The bathroom was designed was teak veneers and solid teak. The sinks are supported by a marble wrapped structure.
MATERIALS:
Kitchen: restored parana pine, lacquer, glass, stainless steel and terazzo.
Bathroom: Teak, glass, Calacatta Statuario marble.
