Project 820

Project 820

The kitchen was designed for a former dining room in this substantial country house. We created two furniture 'elements' providing the main functions for the kitchen. Care has been taken not to interfere with the original architecture of the room. Tall Georgian windows enable light to flood over the furniture as well as providing delightful views of the grounds. Limited palettes of fine quality materials help create the feeling of an art installation; enhancing the drama of this fabulous room.

MATERIALS: The island furniture is clad and the worktops are made from book matched Statuary marble. The furniture is finished with hand polished gloss pigmented lacquer.

This professional cooks kitchen features a custom copper and stainless steel range cooker and extraction canopy, built to match the clients copper pans. Italian Black Basalt stone shelving lines the walls resting on Acero stone brackets, a detail repeated as bench seats in front of the windows and fitted between glazed crockery cabinets. The table was made in solid English Oak with turned legs. The project contains a number of special details such as the custom made copper waste pipe on view under the preparation sink, and inset LED strip lighting in the underside of the stone shelves, wired invisibly through the stone brackets.

MATERIALS: Hand painted Sapele, Italian Black Basalt, Acero limestone, English oak, Lefroy Brooks white brick tiles, antique brass, nickel and pewter ironmongery.

This Queen Anne house, in the heart of the Cotswolds, was added to and altered in the mid 19th and 20th centuries. More recently the current owners undertook a major refurbishment project to rationalise the layout and modernise the house for 21st century living. Artichoke was commissioned to design, make and install the new kitchen, laundry, boot room, larder and dressing room for the house.

MATERIALS: Antiqued oak, Carrara marble, stainless steel, burnished nickel, maple wood, La Cornue range oven, bronze cabinet fittings..

Project 769

Project 769

A striking feel to this contemporary kitchen was achieved by using contrasting materials both in terms of colour and material type. The drama of the walnut and hand applied pigmented lacquer is further complimented by the stainless steel refrigeration and polished steel lighting.

MATERIALS: French walnut and pigmented laquer.

Project 753

Project 753

This project is an excellent example of an ultra modern bespoke kitchen. As psrt of the significant re-design of the interior of this mews house, we worked with the architect to develop the kitchen scheme. Detailed consideration has been given to the challenges raised in minimising the visible component parts of the furniture. By mitreing all the converging planes and limiting the materials used, we have maximised the impact of the kitchen by creating the illusion of simplicity of form.

MATERIALS: Furniture finished with sprayed matt PU lacquer. Flamed and brushed Zimbabwe Black Granite worktops and sink. All metal finishes are brushed stainless steel.

Project 728

Project 728

The brief for this new build thatched house in Devon was to create a kitchen that looked as though it had evolved and been added to over many years. Hand painted simple French farmhouse style furnituresits in the corner housing the scullery section of the kitchen. A large central preparation island in the typical English Georgian sits firmly at the centre of the room, while a crockery cabinet and freestanding larder/fridge unit were designed in the 17th Century English style.

MATERIALS: European oak, hand scraped and waxed English Elm, Verde Maranachi granite.

Project 713

Project 713

Designing for this compact basement space in a London townhouse required considerable planning, particularly given the inconvenient positioning of a structural support. Artichoke overcame the issue by designing a curved breakfast bar at the end of which twin dishwasher drawers were installed. The inward curving doors under the sink created the feeling of extra space, while leaving considerable space for food preparation.

MATERIALS: Black walnut, olive ash veneer, pigmented lacquer and quartz worktops in 'Chalk White'.

Project 696

Project 696

With fabulous views out to sea from the mouth of the River Dart, this kitchen posed some exciting challenges for our team: the new build house had to have all its materials delivered by barge because of difficult access from above. With its proximity to the sea and our clients' passion for sailing, the island was inspired by a yacht's galley. The solid teak worktop includes a wooden preparation sinkand the glass splashback was custom made to follow the curve of the wall.

MATERIALS: Painted furniture finished with sprayed PU pigmented lacquer. Full height glass splashbacks painted in the same colour. Quarter sawn Olive Ash veneers with bespoke recessed stainless steel handle plates and foot rail. Crema Botticino quartz and solid teak worktops. Bespoke teak preparation sink.

Project 642

Project 642

Artichoke designed this painted kitchen to compliment the classical architecture of the house.  Twin islands were introduced to improve the working flow between the cooking and scullery zones.  A stopped chamfer detail was designed into the frame of the doors and end panels.  The door and drawer apertures were kept deliberately free of the traditional cock-bead moulding to lighten the look.

MATERIALS: Painted timber, oak interiors, Carrara marble.

Project 624

Project 624

This modern kitchen and room set was designed and made for the 2006 House and Garden Show. Clean, simple and contemporary styling mixes with natural timbers, limestone and traditional cabinet making to create a kitchen which is cutting edge in design without being too cold, clinical or inpractical to use.

MATERIALS: Wenge, olive ash and pigmented lacquer with Pietra Plana Extra Limestone floor and worktops (provided by Stone Age).

Close liaison with English Heritage was required during the re-design of this kitchen for a Grade 1 1960s house in London.  The original Parana Pine cabinet doors were removed and restored by Artichoke and integrated into a new design.  Glass and lacquer elements were then introduced to combine with the terazzo and stainless steel worktops.

MATERIALS: Restored parana pine, lacquer, glass, stainless steel and terazzo.

Project 587

Project 587

The brief for this Surrey country house kitchen commission demanded a design with tactile elements. Due to a limited amount of wall space, Artichoke designed the main kitchen furniture to fit into a 4.5 metre long central island, with an Aga at the centre.

MATERIALS: European oak, bandsawn scored timber worktops, bush-hammered and flamed Santa Fiore sandstone worktops, rusted handles and painted island cabinets.

Project 581

Project 581

A painted kitchen in the New England style with oak internal cabinets. Custom machine stainless steel knobs designed specifically for the commission lend a modern slant to the design and match stainless steel appliances in the rest if the kitchen. Oak elements were also introduced to compliment the basalt work surfaces.

MATERIALS: Bespoke mixed paint in hand painted finish, black basalt worksurfaces and European oak.

Project 562

Project 562

A 60mm chiselled edge slab of granite rests on bespoke furniture in this contemporary kitchen in Hampstead. The sink was also milled from a solid block of granite. Stainless steel backed recessed handles were designed into the doors. A contrasting island in elm and hand burnished silk lacquer sits in the foreground. To complete the look, Artichoke specified a customised landscape art installation.

MATERIALS: Polphry Purple granite with a hand chiselled edge, wenge, stainless steel, elm, backlit glass and hand burnished lacquer.

Project 481

Project 481

A modern kitchen in oak with honed granite surfaces built inside a hardwood framed glazed extension (designed and built by Town and Country). The doors and drawer fronts are flat with the grain running in a vertical direction. Handles have been recessed into the top edge to create a shadow gap effect. A curved central island forms the focal point of the kitchen, with ribs on the side of the island curving along their length and fanning out as they get higher. Larder cupboards use acid-etched glass with spar handles made from fumed oak.

MATERIALS: Oak, fumed oak, honed black Zimbabwe granite, and acid etched glass.

Project 456

Project 456

A balanced mix of natural and industrial materials have been combined in this commission. Flat panel doors and drawers have a handle recess which creates strong, clean, minimalist lines and introduces a contemporary shadow gap detail. Stainless steel worktops complete the look. A glass, steel and timber larder provides a bright and fresh space to store food.

MATERIALS: European oak, stainless steel, pigmented lacquer and glass.

Project 436

Project 436

Artichoke undertook a series of bespoke pieces for the owner of this London town house, including this sleek contemporary kitchen. The exterior surfaces of the furniture were made from oak; the grain was raked out to create a highly tactile surface. The island exterior was hand-polished lacquer. The worktop stone was made up of bevelled sections so that when assembled it took on the appearance of a much larger piece of stone.

MATERIALS: Hand-raked American oak, pigmented lacquer, Everest stone.

Project 300

Project 300

A painted kitchen in this large and light Rectory. The large island unit features an untreated and scrubbed oak worktop, while modern stainless steel handles add a modern slant to the design.

MATERIALS: Painted cupboards, granite, untreated oak.

Project 291

Project 291

MATERIALS: Caesarstone and elm worktops, spray pigmented lacquer, backpainted glass.

Project 265

Project 265

A fresh and uplifting look was required for this Wiltshire Manor House kitchen. The feeling of space was maximised with minimal use of wall cabinets and a false chimney breast was created to accommodate the mantle surround and house lighting designed to illuminate the Aga. The oak table at the end of the island and barrelled posts soften the look.

MATERIALS: Painted units in oil based egg shell, oak and Bon Accord granite.

Project 207

Project 207

A stylish and contemporary design with doors finished in pigmented lacquer, this kitchen reflects the scale and style of the rest of the house. Simple, streamlined units conceal an array of appliances and fridges, while two chunky islands with elm worksurfaces and a stone pathway set into the timber floor define the cooking area, making it a dramatic focal point. The islands provide plenty of practical space to work in - one of them incorporates a carved bowl for light preparation work complete with a high-tech infrared tap.

MATERIALS: Doors in pigmented lacquer with cupboard interiors in black walnut veneer; Italian basalt surfaces and backsplash; elm island worktops; timber and limestone floor.
